چکیده

Acoustic and detailed swath bathymetry data revealed a systematic picture of submarine landslides on the Siberian part Lomonosov Ridge. Whereas numerous studies mass movement exist along margin Arctic Ocean less is known from central Arctic. A regional survey comprising bathymetry, sediment echo sounder multichannel seismic profiling was performed southeastern The provide constraints present-day morphology Ridge, between 81°–84°N 140°–146°E. We mapped twelve crescent-shaped escarpments located both flanks crest are 2.1 to 10.2 km wide, 1.7 8.2 long 125 851 m high which 58 207 occupied by headscarps. Subbottom show chaotic reflections within most escarpment areas. unit overlain ~110–340 semi-coherent parallel reflections. At its bottom limited partly eroded high-amplitude reflection sequence that inclined with <1° basinwards. find be remnants landslide events mobilized 0.09 7.58 km3 sediments mid Pliocene Miocene. relatively small amounts seem typical for epoch corresponds ongoing subsidence Ridge below sea level. During time deposition load changed. suggest changes in type preconditioned, co-occurring earthquakes finally triggered landslides.

Glacial geomorphology of the Central Arctic Ocean: the Chukchi Borderland and the Lomonosov Ridge

The last decade of geophysical seafloor mapping in the Arctic Ocean from nuclear submarines and icebreakers reveals a wide variety of glaciogenic geomorphic features at water depths reaching 1000 m. These findings provide new and intriguing insights into the Quaternary glacial history of the Northern Hemisphere. Here we integrate multiand single beam bathymetric data, chirp sonar profiles and s...

Deep-Water Flow over the Lomonosov Ridge in the Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean likely impacts global climate through its effect on the rate of deep-water formation and the subsequent influence on global thermohaline circulation. Here, the renewal of the deep waters in the isolated Canadian Basin is quanitified. Using hydraulic theory and hydrographic observations, the authors calculate the magnitude of this renewal where circumstances have thus far preven...

Early to middle Eocene history of the Arctic Ocean from Nd-Sr isotopes in fossil fish debris, Lomonosov Ridge

[1] Strontium and neodymium radiogenic isotope ratios in early to middle Eocene fossil fish debris (ichthyoliths) from Lomonosov Ridge (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302) help constrain water mass compositions in the Eocene Arctic Ocean between !55 and !45 Ma. The inferred paleodepositional setting was a shallow, offshore marine to marginal marine environment with limited connect...

Ocean Currents Modeling along the Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea and the Northern Indian Ocean

The Makran Coast (Iranian Coastline of the Oman Sea on the Northern Indian Ocean) plays an important role in country’s future navigation and trade due to its accessibility. In 2014, the Iranian Makran coastline was selected by the PMO to be studied as the Phase 6 in the series of Monitoring and Modelling Studies of Iranian Coasts with all disciplines being in investigated including currents. Al...

Evidence for ice-free summers in the late Miocene central Arctic Ocean

Although the permanently to seasonally ice-covered Arctic Ocean is a unique and sensitive component in the Earth's climate system, the knowledge of its long-term climate history remains very limited due to the restricted number of pre-Quaternary sedimentary records. During Polarstern Expedition PS87/2014, we discovered multiple submarine landslides along Lomonosov Ridge. Removal of younger sedi...
